SLANG-SCAPES

MAPPING CULTURAL VERNACULARS THROUGH DESIGN

“Slangscapes: Mapping Cultural Vernaculars through Design” explores the intricate relationship between slang and culture. It speaks to its history and maps its expanse and impact.

Slang can serve as a marker of identity, reflecting aspects of one’s background, community, or subculture. It can create a sense of belonging and solidarity among those who share the same linguistic codes.

Society often views slang as grammatically incorrect, unfairly judging individuals based on their ethnicity and appearance when they use it without considering its contextual significance. This transmedia project aims to unveil slang’s importance through an editorial, large-scale expressive graphics, and engagement activities.

MEDIUM 1: CULTURAL COMMUNICATION EDITORIAL

The history editorial describes four places of origin that are commonly known or humored for their slang (Australia, Africa, England, and Canada), providing factual information about how slang arrived and affected the social balance of each place. A dictionary as the second section has slang words from each country with a definition for further understanding.

MEDIUM 2: “SLANG TALKS”

Slang Talks Vinyl Stickers will demonstrate slang words from each place of origin (America, Africa, Australia, Asia, Europe, and London) in stylized chat bubbles. They are designed to represent identity and ethnicity within each country and continent through the shape forms and colors used to create them. Chosen slang words for each place of origin represent the identities of the spoken terms from their origins consisting of greetings and identification of culture and activity. Differences in such words are intended to demonstrate that the use of slang is an ever-evolving creative way of communication.

MEDIUM 3: MAPPING SLANG

The concept of the magnetic puzzle game is to represent cultural communication by representing various slang words commonly used in each of the seven continents of America. Including all seven continents in the final medium elaborates on the notion of slang being a huge aspect of communication all over the globe. Identity of color is used for each continent to demonstrate the diversion of slang words for comprehension of certain words and to categorize places in such origins as well as commonly spoken slang words.
